This
course is designed to acquaint students, county extension agents,
and educators with the diverse agricultural, environmental management,
and agribusiness situation in Veracruz State, Mexico, an important
trading partner with Georgia and other southeastern states.
Students will begin and end the course with seminars at The University
of Georgia campus, and will spend 19-20 days in Xalapa, Mexico,
and surrounding areas studying Spanish and learning about Mexican
culture, food and fiber production systems related agribusinesses,
and corresponding environmental impact concerns.
A typical day in Xalapa will include field trips to coffee plantations
and fruit, vegetable and spice farms to observe daily operations
and environmental mana gement
practices. In the midafternoon, students will attend Spanish language
and Mexican culture classes at the Escuela para Estudiantes Extranjeros,
the School for Foreign Students at the University of Veracruz. Nights
in Xalapa are spent interacting with host familiesand other students,
which provides a personal sense of culture.
At the end of the course, students will have a better understanding
of the Mexican economy, culture, language, and international business
practices, trade, marketing, and management.
