The Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics is recruiting for a Research Coordinator I position in the area of natural resources, the environment and outdoor recreation.

The position requires a Masters degree in natural resource, environmental, GIS, planning or recreation related field with emphasis on data base management, data analysis and applied research in natural resources, the environment and outdoor recreation.  Strong oral and written communication skills and ability to work independently and as a team member are required. Experience and interest in U.S. natural resources, forests and parks and recreation is desired.

The purpose of this position is to provide research project support by coordinating research tasks and conducting data collection, data analysis and research paper and report writing.  Research projects focus on natural resource management, environmental issues and outdoor recreation and wilderness.  Specific major duties and responsibilities include coordinating and conducting development and management of large data bases, data analysis using data management, statistical and GIS software and models, and writing research reports and other publications and distributing information via electronic media including the Internet.

The research coordinator will work closely with departmental faculty members associated in planning and conducting research in the following areas: a) evaluating possible market structures in a market without the existing peanut program; b) investigating market and production efficiencies currently present in competitive peanut producing countries that could be used in Georgia; c) evaluating the potential impact of new generation cooperatives on Georgia peanut farmers and the potential for adoption; e) marketing, consumer, and trade issues affecting the US peanut industry.  The position is grant funded for  twenty-four (24) months with possible continuation.
Qualifications: M.S. degree in agricultural economics, economics, business, or closely related field.
 Salary: Salary is competitive and commensurate with training and experience.

GENERAL NATURE: Full-time Research Coordinator II with emphasis on production economics and farm management.  The position is grant funded for a period of twenty-four (24) months with possible continuation.  The position is located on either the Griffin or Tifton campus of the University of Georgia.  

CLOSING DATE:    January 4, 2002

JOB DUTIES:  The candidate will work with department faculties on a research project relating to the economics of peanut production.  Major focuses will be development of representative peanut farms for the southeastern states, whole-farm modeling, assemble a cost-of-production database, evaluate peanut production efficiency using relevant econometric and/or math programming analyses and publication of results.  

QUALIFICATIONS:  M.S. in agricultural economics or closely related field.  Experience in farm management, enterprise budgets and focus group interviews desired but not required. 

SALARY:   Salary is competitive and commensurate with training and experience.

General Nature:  Research Coordinator II, specializing in Farm Management and Production Economics.  The position is a 24-month (2 years) appointment with the possibility of renewal.

Location:  The position is located on The University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences campus  in Tifton, Georgia.  Tifton/Tift County is a progressive community of 37,000 residents.  The Tifton campus includes the Coastal Plain Experimental Station, the Cooperative Extension Service, and USDA-ARS.  Total faculty and classified staff on the Tifton campus number approximately 400.  The Department offers excellent support and opportunities for professional growth and development.

Job Duties:  The research coordinator will work closely with the department faculty associated with the Center, and  production scientists involved with the Southeastern Peanut Research Initiative, in planning and conducting research related to the following areas:  a) Define management variables affecting multi-crop yields, quality and profitability for crop production practices on peanuts farms; b) Develop methods for incorporating research into an integrated farm and crop production management system; c) Coordinate and evaluate experimental and on-farm research of crop production practices and advances in technology; and d) Develop enterprise budgets for crop production under various soil types and cultural practices.

Qualifications:  M.S. degree in agricultural economics, or closely related field, with an emphasis on computer applications in farm management is required.  Experience in collection of farm level data;  economic analyses with agronomic experimental data, farmer enterprise data, and whole farm records; farm planning models; and ability to work cooperatively in a multidisciplinary environment is preferred.

GENERAL NATURE:   The person in this position plans, performs, and coordinates the installation and maintenance of software and hardware related to network servers and workstations.  This person also coordinates the preparation of computer labs used in undergraduate and graduate education.

Serve as the clearinghouse for all services, assign tasks, monitor workloads, and set priorities on requests to the computer support staff (CSS).  Perform administrative and personnel management duties for CSS.

Maintain the Department's local area network, which serves 500 users.  Plan, manage, and perform the installation, upgrade, backup, and maintenance of all network server software and hardware.  Perform and coordinate network troubleshooting.

Plan, perform, and coordinate the installation of all personal computer software and hardware.

Coordinate the production of  high quality graphics for conferences, seminars, meetings, etc.

Instruct faculty, staff, and graduate students on the use of various software and hardware.  Coordinate, conduct, and assist in undergraduate and graduate computer seminars for AAE courses and in special training sessions for all AAE personnel.  Develop multimedia courseware.

Coordinate the preparation of the LAN and computer labs to be used for special teaching purposes, hire lab assistants, coordinate lab assistant's schedules, and oversee the departmental help desk.

Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of the use of the Internet and provide technical assistance to AAE personnel using the Internet.

Supervise the installation, setup, and maintenance of the AAE Web site. 

Evaluate emerging technologies and information processing systems.  Coordinate the gathering of current pricing information on requested computer hardware and software.

Ensure that detailed documentation exists for major projects, courseware, and various hardware and software.

Coordinate and oversee the use of the Futures Trading Exercise, Marketing in Action, Swopsim, EMP, and all other departmental courseware.

Devise, install, setup, and maintain graphics lab, undergraduate computer lab, and graduate computer lab.

Other duties as assigned by Department Head.

Qualifications:
 

 

A Masters Degree in one of the following fields: computer science, systems analysis, operations research, mathematics, management science, agricultural economics or related field.  Extensive experience with Novell Netware and networking required.  Preference will be given to candidates with CNA or CNE certification or training.

40 words per minute typing speed; WordPerfect and e-mail skills; excellent communication and organizational skills; and 1-2 years secretarial experience or training required.  High school diploma required.
