Multi-Media Can Work For It
by Valeriy Smaznoy
What makes WACRAforums exceptionally attractive is the opportunity of getting the most recent information in terms of new teaching approaches, case writing techniques, etc. This summer in Warsaw, the multi-media case study "Riverdance..." presented by Dr. Barra O Cinneide and "Teaching and Learning in the 21st Century"- multi-media case development produced by Dr. John Vargo, Dr. Hal Schroeder, Anna Osterczuk and Jacek Mironski, proved to be among the most captivating events.
It is not accidental that both teams focus their efforts upon the cultural issues which, if properly managed can encourage a business and if not, can lead to failure. The differences in cultural and ethical values are very delicate areas which need to be understood by both: the East European marketing manager aspiring to do business internationally and the Western managers desiring to operate in Eastern European markets. "Riverdance.." provides a wide range of techniques (from video and computer animation with tutorials to an easily accessed background database conveying a subtle feeling of a genre and its exact place in a national identity formula.
The Harlequin multi-media case also advocates a thrust for new teaching technologies and highlights the benefits of interactive pedagogy. Data concerning east European preferences can be adjusted and the potential for using the background resource and for developing world wide web skills, is amazing.
The panel and open form facilitated by Dr. Hans E. Klein and Dr. William T. Stevens on the "Portability of American MBA Programs" also highlighted the differences in Eastern and Western approaches to education in general and to the MBA programs in particular. The panelists efforts were well received by an appreciative audience. The discussion about how to implement American MBA programs successfully in Eastern Europe turned into a lively discussion where Slavs stressed their pressing needs. While not all differences of opinion could be resolved during the time available, the open and frank discussion contributed to a better understanding on both sides. No doubt, the multi-media and other interactive approaches advocated by WACRA were successful in their applications in Warsaw.
